Making the decision to become a surrogate mother or to use a surrogate mother is a big step. However, it’s not the final decision you will make during the process. Once you’ve decided to take the surrogacy road, it’s time to review your options for how the pregnancy will take place and determine which is the best fit for your family. Here’s what you need to know.
In-Vitro Fertilization
In-vitro fertilization is the most common option used for surrogacy. The parents-to-be provide their sperm and eggs, which are then fertilized outside of the womb using a technologically advanced process. The embryos are then implanted into the uterus of the selected surrogate.
Egg Donation
The egg donation option involves harvesting eggs from a donor, fertilizing them outside of the womb with the male parent’s sperm, and then transplanting the embryo into the female parent’s uterus.
In-Vitro Fertilization With Egg Donation
In this scenario, the beginning of the process is the same as an egg donation. The donor eggs are fertilized outside of the womb with the male parent’s sperm; however, the embryo is implanted into a surrogate mother’s uterus as opposed to the female parent. The child will not be genetically related to the surrogate or the female parent, but will be genetically related to the male parent.
Artificial Insemination
Artificial insemination is a more affordable procedure that allows pregnancy to happen naturally. The male parent’s sperm are artificially placed into the body of the surrogate during the time of ovulation, in order to increase the chances that a pregnancy will occur. In this case, the child is genetically related to the surrogate and the male parent, and the non-biological parent must proceed with an adoption. This is a viable option for both heterosexual parents and male couples who wish to have a child.
Artificial Insemination With a Donor
For couples who choose artificial insemination with a donor, the process is exactly the same as an artificial insemination, with the exception of using donor sperm instead of sperm from a male parent. This is an excellent option for female couples who wish to utilize a surrogate.
