Egg donation can be both a financially and emotionally rewarding endeavor for a young woman. However, there are some requirements that she must meet in order to ensure that the eggs being donated are as healthy and viable as possible. Continue reading for more information about what the qualifications are to become an egg donor.

Egg Donor Requirements

Although the requirements can vary slightly from agency to agency, generally the following must be true for a donor:

  • The donor must be between the ages of 21 and 29
  • The donor must not be significantly over or underweight for her height
  • The donor must have two ovaries
  • The donor must not be a smoker or a drug user

In some cases, the donor may be required to have some kind of formal education outside of high school.

What Will a Donor Have to Do?

Egg donation is a process that includes the donor taking medications, giving herself hormonal or medication injections, and keeping approximately 10 doctor’s appointments. Often, these doctor’s appointments must be completed in the morning. During the actual donation process, the donor will receive medication intravenously to promote relaxation and a thin needle will be inserted into the vaginal wall and into the ovaries in order to collect the eggs. Most women have some minor symptoms similar to that of their menstrual cycle for a few days.

Are You Ready to Become an Egg Donor?

Many people believe that women donate eggs for the money; however, most women who choose to go through the extensive process of donating their eggs do so for the simple joy of helping a couple grow their family. Egg donors must understand that donating eggs is a serious commitment and they must be prepared to keep their doctor’s appointments and follow all advice given by their doctor.
